Barnaby Nygren, Ph.D.

Barnaby Nygren, who began teaching at Loyola in 2004, is known for his challenging discourse on the history of art and printmaking, focusing on the Renaissance and Baroque art. He takes advantage of Baltimore’s world-class art museums, often teaching his classes at the Walters Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. His courses include lectures on Italian and Northern Renaissance art, Baroque art, prints and printmaking, and Spanish colonial art. Nygren also has particular interest in perspective and humor in early Renaissance painting, psychoanalysis and art, Michelangelo, and art and the New World. His favorite aspect of teaching? Working with art students to help them realize the transferable nature of the skills he teaches and showing them how they can be applied in other classes—and in their future careers. Dr. Nygren holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
