- Academic Focus Law and Social Responsibility
Michael Runnels, J.D., associate professor of law and social responsibility, received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Georgia and his law degree from Fordham University School of Law. His research focuses on corporate social responsibility and the connection between good business and good ethics. Runnels aims to create an intellectually rigorous environment in his classroom for students to actively engage in the learning process. “Loyola’s student-to-teacher ratio allows me to substantively engage each student and provide them individualized attention consistent with the Jesuit core value of cura personalis,” says Runnels, who began teaching at Loyola in 2007. His students might be surprised to learn he survived three near-death experiences while alone in the wilderness. “Problem-solving my way out of each experience was an utterly empowering experience that continually provides me a more mindful perspective when faced with more urban stressors,” the Augusta, Ga. native explains.

I utilize a teaching style that is best described as student-centered and responsive to the needs of current and future business practitioners. I believe that students should be active participants in working through real-life examples.
