Biography

Matt Mulcahy grew up in Ardmore, PA. He graduated from Macalester College in 1990, worked for two years at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC, and returned to the Twin Cities for graduate school. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1999. His first book, Hurricanes and Society in the British Greater Caribbean, 1624-1783, was published by the Johns Hopkins University Press in 2006. A paperback edition was published in 2008. Hubs of Empire: The Southeastern Lowcountry and British Caribbean, also with Johns Hopkins was published in 2014. His most recent book, Sea & land, an Environmental History of the Caribbean was published by Oxford University Press in 2022. He was chair of the department from 2007 to 2014.
