Knekiya

Knekiya is pursuing a Master of Science in Clinical Professional Counseling with the goal of become a mental health therapist. Knekiya, who is from Waldorf, Maryland, and received her undergraduate degree in psychology. Loyola’s CPC program provides students like Knekiya with experience outside of the classroom through externships. She works at Turn Around Inc., which allows her to use her clinical skills to work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. She also loves that Loyola allows her to pursue her passion for mental health while serving as a mentor in two positions: the Ignatius Scholars Graduate Assistantship and the Academic and Career Enrichment Graduate Assistantship. With the Ignatius Scholars, Knekiya leads the transition to college for 30-40 underrepresented first-year students, helping them discover campus resources and getting them acclimated to life in Baltimore. As a mentor in the Academic and Career Enrichment Graduate Assistantship in ALANA, she supports the success of underrepresented students through hosting workshops on topics like time management and résumés. “My assistantships support my experience in my master’s program by giving me the opportunity to assist undergraduates through emotional struggles. This work with underrepresented students amplifies my knowledge of how to address minority mental health.”
