LaShanda

LaShanda wears many hats as a fifth and seventh grade English Language Arts Teacher, Service-Learning Coordinator, English Department Chair, and facilitator. While she has many roles in her school, she supports her students in and out of the classroom in all of them. She has lived in Owings Mills, Maryland for the past 20 years, and she attended Morgan State University, where she earned both a Bachelor and Master of Arts in English. She was drawn to Loyola’s Curriculum and Instruction for Social Justice program because she “wanted to learn new ways to share my passion for social justice in the classroom and with my colleagues.” LaShanda applies what she learns in Loyola’s classrooms to her classroom daily. “I try to see my curriculum as my students see it. I consider the technological tools in our classroom carefully to protect my students’ online identity and their privacy. I also examine my curriculum to identify which voices are missing.” After graduating in May 2022, she will attend Howard University to obtain her doctorate in Educational Leadership & Policy. LaShanda’s long-term career goal is to work with state governments to create programs for marginalized groups as they matriculate through our country’s public school system.
