- Class of 2019
- Major Mechanical Engineering
A long-time fascination with innovation inspired Sophie’s interest in pursuing her bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. She says Loyola’s Jesuit values influenced her decision to attend the university—and four years later, these values have prepared her for life after Loyola. “During my time here, I’ve made it a point to embrace each of the ten core values, which has been beneficial in growing into my best self,” says Sophie, who grew up in Lancaster, Pa. Sophie secured a development internship with IBM’s Watson Health division, an opportunity that has allowed her to explore her interest in patent law. In fact, she has submitted four patent applications with her IBM colleagues. Beyond her classes, Sophie is involved on campus with the Evergreens, Relay For Life, and the Society of Women Engineers. “My leadership skills have greatly improved thanks to the training I’ve received through Student Leadership Corps and Evergreen training,” she says. “My peers inspire me to be a better leader and person. This personal development is something that I hope to continue working on and I know it will benefit me wherever my career or life in general takes me.”

I love going to school in Baltimore because I can go hiking in the morning, walk around the Inner Harbor in the afternoon, and then eat dinner in Little Italy. There is such a variety of activities and diversity of people that you never get bored or stop learning here.
