Data Science Career Insights – Networking and Panel Event

Join Loyola University Maryland in the Andrew White Student Center's Fourth Floor Program Room on Tuesday, April 2 from 6 - 8:30 p.m., for Data Science Career Insights, a networking and panel discussion event. The night begins with networking at 6 p.m. and culminates at 7 p.m. in the form of an expert panel discussion featuring data science professionals from across a variety of industries.

About the Panel

Data Science is the number one job in America for the past three years in a row according to Glassdoor. How do regional data science professionals view their work and challenges in this newly emerging field? How do you get started or advance in this new world of data insight and predictions?  During this panel discussion and networking event, data science professionals and aspiring data scientists will engage in an evening of career networking and guided discussion featuring professionals from finance, cybersecurity, healthcare, and software development.

Edward J. Fortunato - Managing Director, Constellation Energy

Edward FortunatoEdward J. Fortunato is the managing director of fundamental analysis, at Constellation Energy, an Exelon Company. Over the last fifteen years at Exelon, Edward has managed the proprietary trading book, the short-term analytics group, and has led the implementation of trading strategies in both the proprietary and hedging books. Prior to working at Exelon, Edward served as the vice president of natural gas trading at Merrill Lynch Global Commodities, and as a senior energy trader at Edison Mission Energy. Edward has an MBA with high honors in finance from Boston University and a BBA from Baruch College. He is an active community member, involved with Our Daily Bread since first arriving in Baltimore, serving as their dinner chair for the last two years. He is also on the dinner committee for Partners in Excellence and is the chair for Loyola University Maryland’s data science board. Ed lives In Ellicott City Maryland with his wife and dog.

Matt Hutchinson - Chief Data Scientist, Red Alpha LLC

Mr. Hutchinson grew up on a farm in Montana and has a master’s degree in mathematics from Montana State University and a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Cambridge. He worked as an Applied Research Mathematician at the National Security Agency before running a small defense contracting company focused on data science. After selling that company he moved to Booz Allen Hamilton, ultimately leading a team of 60 data scientists across public and private sector engagements. He is currently Chief Data Scientist at Red Alpha, where he is focused on building the data science practice. He lives just a few miles north of Loyola with his wife and three kids, and thus has often taken advantage of the excellent babysitting pedigree of Loyola students.

Tom Iler - Chief Product Officer, Catalyte

Tom Iler is passionate about unleashing human potential and creating teams that accomplish amazing things. Having managed technology, data science and product teams for the last 20 years, he has experienced the convergence of creativity with big data and the powerful results it can produce. Born in Florida, Tom moved to Maryland 30 years ago where he continues to reside with his wife and two sons.

Ann Irvine - Director of Data Science, Arceo

Ann Irvine serves as director of data science at Arceo, a fast-growing technology startup that is bridging the gap between insurance and cybersecurity. Prior to joining Arceo, Irvine assumed the role of chief data scientist for user and data security at Forcepoint after its acquisition of RedOwl, where she was a principal data scientist and an early-stage employee. Irvine holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College, an M.S. in Information Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University. Her doctoral research focused on natural language processing with a specialization in low-resource statistical machine translation. Irvine has been a proud Baltimore City resident for over a decade and is also a quilter, mother, and ultra marathoner.

Summer Li - Director of Data Science, Capital One

Summer Li is a Director in Data Science at Capital One. She has over ten years of experience in the financial services industry specializing in digital marketing, test and learn, data architecture, natural language processing, and credit risk underwriting. She values continuous learning. Her team is currently hiring data scientists to build machine learning and automation tools for risk management.

Geoff Osier - Senior Engineer, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Geoff helps lead the Health Data Science and Analytics Group at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. He oversees the development of the Precision Medicine Analytics Platform (PMAP) at Johns Hopkins Medicine. This platform combines medical records, images, reports, physiological data, and genomics into useable datasets. It also provides researchers and clinicians with analytical tools to develop more precise care for their patient populations. Geoff has both a B.S. and M.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Purdue University.
