Dr. Peter Murrell, my late, beloved colleague, founded the Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) at Loyola University Maryland. In addition to his work on African-centered education, Peter’s deep belief in community-rootedness fueled his vision for higher education as a resource in service of urban schools’ success. I am thrilled and humbled to continue his work, and the CIUE is committed to serving urban schools and communities.
To that end, the CIUE works toward anti-racist, anti-oppressive education. Our work is outwardly facing, in partnership with urban schools and community organizations and inwardly facing, devoted to challenging the colorblind racist ideology that permeates traditional pre-service and in-service educator preparation and development. We aspire to generate ideas that lead to educators to resist, disrupt, and dismantle systems of oppression in schooling policies and practices and to work alongside and on behalf of those who are the most under-resourced and school dependent.
The vision is for the work of the CIUE to lead to transformation of education policy and practice throughout Baltimore. The city needs and deserves it.
