The Office of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies is seeking a graduate research assistant to assist with academic coaching and support to first year students with a particular emphasis on underserved populations (first-generation, Pell eligible and/or ALANA students). In addition, the graduate research assistant will help with the assessment of the Ignatius Scholars Program objectives and other departmental assessment efforts.

  1. The position is 20hrs/week that totals to 800 hours between the Fall & Spring semesters.
  2. Compensation will total to $13,500; 50% Tuition Amount & 50% Stipend Amount
  3. The GAs will be permitted to procure additional employment with the approval of the Supervisor

Qualifications

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a graduate student at Loyola University Maryland, preferably in Psychology, Counseling or Education
  • Prior office experience and a strong attention to detail as well as a high level of organization and time management
  • Ability to manage several projects at one time
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong experiential knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, (i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse populations, cultures, backgrounds, and nationalities while demonstrating an open-mind and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal skills
  • Experience creating handouts and flyers
  • Must be able to work well with others and possess qualities for successful teamwork in the workplace

Preferences

  • Experience in providing direct student support services, such as tutoring or counseling.
  • Strong organizational, presentation, administrative, and communication skills, ability to work independently and effectively is a must
  • Ability to work well with a traditional college student population as well as with staff and faculty, and other members of the Loyola community

Scope and Responsibilities

  • Assist first-year students with academic difficulties and provide periodic academic coaching meetings, including but not limited to assigned participants of the Ignatius Scholars Program
  • Assess the academic components and academic resource utilization of the Ignatius Scholars and assist with other departmental assessment efforts (i.e. student withdrawal surveys, transfer discernment process, etc.)
  • Refer students to the appropriate campus resources (i.e. Counseling Center, Student Health Center, The Study, etc.)
  • Help organize and facilitate ODUGS workshops, trainings, and events
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity when communicating with all students
  • Maintain a high sense of work ethic, flexibility, responsibility, and confidentiality
