Associate Director for Recruitment and Staff Development

The Associate Director for Recruitment and Staff Development is responsible for all student staff and professional staff recruitment, hiring, on-boarding, and continued training, along with all assessment practices for the Office of Student Life. The Associate Director also provides direct supervision to two Assistant Directors (ADs), serves as a senior member of the on-call system, and serves as a member of the office leadership team. The Associate Director reports directly to the Director of Student Life.

Because the Associate Director is part of a larger Student Life team, this position also provides a unique opportunity to develop skills in high-level crisis response, staff supervision, student conduct, and housing operations.  This position also directly supervises two live-in ADs who are responsible for the day-to-day management of combined residential areas consisting of six Graduate Residence Coordinators (GRCs), 27 Resident Assistants (RAs) and 1200 residents. On a small, collaborative campus, the Associate may also be involved in campus-wide initiatives including serving as a mentor in Messina – Loyola’s living learning initiative.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Recruitment and Hiring

  • Serve as the hiring manager for all professional staff positions, in consultation with the Director
  • Develop job postings in partnership with Human Resources, coordinate application review processes, and coordinate all candidate logistics for professional hiring processes
  • Provide guidance and oversight for all graduate and undergraduate student staff recruitment and hiring processes 
  • Support divisional hiring processes and serve as a resource for other offices

Staff Development and Training

  • Envision and execute professional staff training and on-going development strategies rooted in our Core Values of justice, discernment, and cura personalis for 15 team members
  • Provide guidance and leadership for the on-going training of 75 RAs, 5 Senior RAs, and 19 GRCs
    Support divisional student training and leadership initiatives 

Assessment Strategies

  • Plan and coordinate assessment practices for the Office
  • Design, administer, and analyze data from the annual Resident Student Survey as well as any other benchmarking tools for residence life and community development
  • Utilize various software programs, including Qualtrics and SharePoint
  • Provide guidance and leadership for all staff evaluation and feedback processes
  • Support divisional assessment aims through participation with the Research Consultation Group

Supervision and Team Leadership

  • Support both the departmental and divisional goals focused on diversity and inclusion
  • Directly supervise two Masters-level, live-in ADs providing guidance related to crisis response, community development, staff dynamics, and housing operations as well as office-wide RA/GRC recruitment, training, and development processes
  • Indirectly supervise six Assistant Directors in collaboration with peer Associates specifically in regards to recruitment, training, and performance management
  • Lead and participate in student staff and professional staff training and meetings
  • Serve in the senior level on-call rotation for campus-wide emergencies potentially responding to emergencies in all areas of residential living.  During rotation, must be within 30 minutes of campus if response needed 
  • Communicate regularly with peer Associates and Director to discuss office needs, strategic planning, and office processes


  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling in Student Affairs or a related field
  • 3-5 years of post-Master’s professional experience & 1-3 years of residence life and on-call crisis response experience
  • Demonstrated ability to support and advocate for underrepresented students as well as utilizing a social justice lens in the development of training, development, and recruitment processes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum design, experience creating and assessing learning outcomes, strong presentation skills, and the ability to create engaging staff development activities that cultivate leadership and positive staff morale  
  • Experience supervising professional staff and availability during night and weekend hours 
  • Experience supervising graduate or professional staff
  • Availability during night and weekend hours
  • Demonstrated ability to assess complex situations and render fair judgments, maintaining ethical and professional standards
