Here is information about the 2016 - 2017 Housing Selection process.  Please read this information carefully even if you have gone through this process before; we revise the process every year.  It is important that you complete the phases below by the deadlines listed if you want to live in Loyola housing. We provide housing on a space available basis. It is important for you to check your Loyola e-mail as we will communicate specific instructions for each class year in this manner. Additionally, we encourage you to check back on this page as we will be updating it as the process progresses.

February 1 - February 8, 2016
Phase One: Intent for 2016 - 2017

All students [with the exception of those that are graduating in May 2016]  need to complete this phase. You will need to log in to your Inside Loyola account and select RoomRez Housing Portal, located under Quick Links on the right-hand side.  During this phase, you will declare your intent for the 2016-2017 academic year, update your home and emergency contact information, and select your meal plan. You will then be prompted to “sign” or agree to  the housing contract if you want to live in Loyola housing. If you are considering living off campus and have questions, please contact Dave Tiscione. If you are considering pursuing other educational opportunities at another school, please contact Megan Rowe.

What is Intent to Return?
This phase lets the Office of Student Life know what your plans are for next year.  We make decisions based on the number of students who plan to live in Loyola housing, those who plan to live off campus, and those who plan to study abroad.  By completing this phase we understand what kind of communication we need to send you in the future.

Do I need to complete this phase if I am studying abroad in the fall of 2016 or for the full 2016-2017 academic year?
YES!  All students who currently live on campus or are currently studying abroad in Loyola programs MUST complete this phase.  More information about housing options for the spring of 2017 will be shared with you when you are abroad.

Do I need to complete this phase if I am going to live off campus?
Yes!  All students who plan to move off campus need to complete this phase and let us know your intention to live off campus.  This will also give you the opportunity to select a meal plan if you choose to.  Just a reminder that once you move off campus, you will be put on the housing waitlist if you wish to return to Loyola housing. Students are pulled from the waitlist on a space available basis. Students who currently live off campus do not need to complete this phase.

Should I complete this phase if I am planning on pursuing other educational opportunities at another school?
Great question!  Since you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of $600 in order to select housing, we strongly encourage you to consider how definite your plans are.  If you KNOW you will not be returning to Loyola in the fall, then we encourage you to NOT fill out this phase and instead let us know by sending an email to Megan Rowe.  If you are unsure but are worried about paying the $600 deposit knowing you will not be refunded if you decide to leave Loyola, we encourage you to speak to your family and make the decision that is right for you.  If you decide to not complete this phase and later want to live on campus, we are always happy to add you to the housing waitlist and place you on a space available basis.

What should I do if I am unsure if I plan to live off campus in non-Loyola housing?
This year we have more students than ever before who want Loyola housing.  We have a plan to accommodate as many students as possible, however in fairness to your fellow Loyola students, we encourage you to make a final decision about living off campus prior to February 8, 2016.  Please keep in mind that once you pay your $600 deposit, it is non-refundable.

I am interested in living at The Guilford through Loyola? Do I need to fill out my intent to return if I am interested in that option?
Yes!  Complete your intent for Loyola housing.  PLEASE do NOT indicate that you are "living off-campus." 

Do I have to select my meal plan before February 8, 2016?
Yes!  This year we have incorporated meal plan selection into the housing selection process so it is easier for all students.  You can make changes to the meal plan until September 9, 2016 by returning to the portal and changing your selection.  If you have any questions about the meal plan, or want more information please visit http://www.loyola.edu/department/dining/mealplans or email dining@loyola.edu.

How serious is the housing contract?
The housing contract is a legally binding agreement between the student and the University.  Similar to a lease you would sign for an apartment, it is important that you read and understand its contents BEFORE you agree to it.  If you agree to the contract and later want to back out, there are penalties. Please think about your choice carefully.  A copy of the 2016-2017 housing contract can be found here.

What happens if I miss this deadline?
You cannot proceed in the process and will not be able to live with your intended roommates. You possibly may not even get to live in Loyola housing.  We are really not kidding about that; you need to complete this phase and all others on time!

Does everyone in my group have to fill this out, or can I just do it for everyone?
Each individual person must fill it out.  Since you will be updating your emergency contact information, selecting a meal plan, and agreeing to your housing contract, this process has to be completed by each individual student.

Why do I need to update my emergency contact and sign up for my meal plan?
We hope we never need to use your emergency contact information, but if we do, we need it to be accurate.  We have you sign up for your meal plan during this phase because it is the only phase where each individual student is logging onto the portal.

February 15 - February 19, 2016
Phase Two: Roommate Group Formation/Verification

During this phase, you will need to form a roommate group.  Each group will designate a group leader to create the group, and assign a username and password for the group.  Once this is done, the group leader will then assign students to the group or give the group members the username and password so they may join the group themselves.  Groups must be comprised of 2, 4, 6, or 8 individuals in order to be complete.  Incomplete groups will not be permitted to participate in room selection. Once the group is complete, the group leader will need to log in and verify the group. During Phase Five, the group leader must be the one to choose the room during the assigned housing selection time slot.

How many people can be in my group?
Groups can be 2, 4, 6, or 8. We encourage you to form roommate groups that best suits your living style.  But, keep in mind that we have a limited number of each apartment size. Please have a backup plan in case the apartment style you desire is no longer available during your selection time slot.  A list of all of the rooms on campus separated by group size can be found here.  

Do I have to make a group or can I just go “random”? 
In order to select housing, you must be part of a group.  Student Life will host roommate socials so you can find a group and give opportunities to put up a roommate request online. We encourage you to take part in these processes so you can have a say in where you live.

What happens if I sign up with a group and later decide that I don’t want to live with them anymore?
Selecting the right group can be challenging.  We encourage you to make your decision carefully and make sure you are comfortable living with the whole group.  Once you agree to join your group and your group is given a lottery time, you are locked in and cannot go to another group.  Trust us; it is MUCH easier to have tough conversations about things you might be concerned about now rather than waiting to have these conversations when you are living with each other.

What happens if there are not enough rooms for the size group I want to live with?
Every year we have to reconfigure groups once lottery times come out.  Last year we had to reconfigure 45 groups of rising sophomores who wanted to be in a group of 6 so it is important that you have a backup plan in case your group is told you need to reconfigure.  Please know that we will contact you as soon as possible to let you know if you need to reconfigure, and we will assist you in making a new group.

There is someone I want to live with, but they are currently on a leave of absence from Loyola. How do I get them in my group?
You can only group with people who are currently living on campus OR those that are in a Loyola study abroad program.  Unfortunately, we cannot leave a space open in your group for someone on a leave of absence from Loyola, in a non-Loyola study abroad program or someone who currently lives off campus but wants to return to campus.  Please encourage your friend to e-mail Megan Rowe in order to be placed on the housing waitlist.

Can I be in a group with people in class years other than my own?
Yes!  All class years (with the exception of incoming first years) can select to live together.  You should note that depending on the class years represented in your group your lottery time could be affected.

Help!  I am in a group and need another member OR am a single needing a group!
Don’t worry!  Student Life will be hosting roommate socials in early February so you can find a group or a member for your group.  We will also be sending out information on how to post a roommate request online to help you find others in a similar situation.  Keep an eye on your inbox!

Roommate socials are a great way to meet others in your class year who are looking for roommates.  Whether you are a single looking for a group or a group needing one or more members, this is your opportunity to meet others.

All roommate socials will be hosted in the 4th Floor Programming Room

Substance Free Housing Application Due

Are you interested in living a substance free lifestyle?  Want to join a community with like-minded individuals?  Join the substance free community!  This community is traditionally housed in Seton Court and offers students the opportunity to live in a community free of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco.  For more information and to download the quick application click here.

What if I do not have any roommates?  Can I still live in the substance free community?
Yes!  We welcome those in full groups of 4 or 6 as well as single individuals and roommate pairs.  We will do our best to house everyone in the housing size they desire. 

Why do students usually choose to live in substance free housing?
The college life is one full of decisions and choices.  Many students want a community where alcohol and drugs are not a part of the daily life.  The substance free community is an area where residents have made the commitment that alcohol, drugs, and tobacco are not a part of their college experience and commit to not using these substances or inviting others who have chosen to use these into the community.

I am not sure if this community is right for me, is there someone I can talk to about it?

Phase Three: Housing Deposit Due

A deposit of $600 [$300 for tuition and $300 for housing] is required for all students who want to return to Loyola housing. This deposit is paid to Student Administrative Services. The deposit is non-refundable.

Please review the following to ensure your deposit is paid correctly:

Athletes – Students who receive full tuition and full housing grants do not need to make a deposit. SAS informs Student Life and Records that these students are allowed to participate in registration and housing selection. Students who receive a full tuition grant and no room grant must submit the $300 housing deposit to be eligible for room selection. The same applies for students who receive full housing grants but partial tuition grants.  The $300 tuition deposit is required in order to register for classes.

Resident Assistants – All current RA’s are required to pay the $300 tuition deposit in order to register for classes, but do not have the pay the $300 housing deposit.  Any student applying to become an RA is required to pay both tuition and housing deposits.

Merit Based Scholars – Students receiving any form of merit based scholarship, whether privately funded or Loyola based, are required to pay both deposits if the student chooses to live on campus.  Commuters are also required to pay the full $300 tuition deposit as these scholarships have requirements to be met each semester.

Tuition Remission – Like merit based scholarships, tuition remission is reviewed on a semester by semester basis.  Any student receiving tuition remission, whether Loyola based or from an outside university or college, is required to pay the full appropriate deposit.

Returning from Abroad – All students currently studying at Loyola’s abroad campuses or on one of Loyola’s exchange and affiliation programs are required to pay both deposits if living on campus or tuition deposit if living off campus.  We ask parents/guardians to make sure they pay the appropriate deposit on behalf of the student.

How much is the deposit and how do I pay it?
The total deposit due is $600 ($300 for housing and $300 for classes).  The payment needs to be made to Student Administrative Services.  The easiest way to pay is online at: http://www.loyola.edu/department/reenrollmentdeposit.aspx

Why do I have to pay a deposit for housing and a deposit for classes?
By separating the deposits for class and housing we are able to easily discern if you have committed to classes AND housing or just classes.

If I have an outstanding balance on my account do I have to pay it before I pay my deposit?
YES!  All students are required to have their accounts paid before the deposit is put on your account.

I am worried about paying the deposit, should I just wait and pay late?
No!  It is extremely important that if you are concerned about making the deposit that you speak to someone in Student Administrative Services BEFORE February 26, 2016.  They will work with you, but you have to contact them BEFORE the deadline.

Lottery Times Assigned

All roommate groups will be assigned a time for room selection and will get an e-mail with the group's assigned room selection time and directions on what to expect when the process begins.  Much like registration for class, you will not have access to the room selection process until your scheduled time.

How are lottery times assigned?
Each student is randomly assigned a lottery number that is associated with a lottery time.  Each group will receive an email that lets them know the groups best lottery time.  Each group will have 15 minutes to log into the Housing Portal and select a room.  10 groups will be selecting at the same time.

I heard that there are ways to get a better lottery time, is that true?
No!  Lottery times are completely random.  Every year students suggest ways to alter the lottery, however a completely random process is the only way to ensure fairness.

I am the group leader but I have class during our allotted selection time, what do I do?
You can send an email to Megan Rowe and request that another member of your group be deemed the leader and they will select on behalf of your group.

March 18 - April 1, 2016
Phase Four: Explore Housing Options

This is your chance to see all of the housing options for next year. More information will be communicated via e-mail.

Do all housing options cost the same?
Your housing rate does depend on whether you are living in a suite or an apartment.  For more information, keep an eye on Student Administrative Service's webpage for updated rates.

Which rooms on campus can I select if I'm in a group of 2 (or 4 or 6 or 8.)

I am not sure my roommate or I can make it to the housing tours, are floor plans available online?
The Office of Student Life would love to offer an accurate floor plan for each space on campus, however at this time we are not able to do so.  We highly suggest doing everything you can to see the spaces available prior to selection.

March 30 - April 13, 2016
Phase Five: Room Selection

What do I need to do in order to prepare for housing selection? Below are three sections that will each help you prepare for housing selection.

A few days before your room selection time:

  • Have a conversation with your group about where they are interested in living.  Use the “Lottery Housing Options” sheet to determine where rooms are available and rank order the group choices form highest choice to lowest choice.
  • Decide who is going to live together in each bedroom and make sure the group leader knows the roommate pairs as they will need to assign each student to a specific bedroom.
  • Make sure that the group is aware of the lottery time and group leader.  The group leader you designated is the ONLY one who can select a room for the group so it is imperative that the group leader is prepared.  If you need to change your group leader you must email Megan Rowe immediately. 
A few minutes before your designated room selection time:
  • Log into your Inside Loyola account so you are ready to click on the Room Rez Housing Portal.  
  • Take a deep breath; you are going to select a great room! 
When your designated time arrives:
  • Click on the Room Rez Housing Portal
  • Click “start application”
  • Select 16-17 Academic year and then click “Save and Continue”
  • Click on “Room Search” under Rooms on the left hand side of the screen
  • Select  Building
  • Select a room and then click “Save and Continue”
  • Highlight each bedroom listed and then click “Save and Continue”
  • Select which bed you and each of your group members will live in and then click “Reserve Beds”
  • Once you see the green check you are done!
