Loyola University Maryland

Reforestation Project

Vines on wall

In 2010, the University completed construction of a new multi-use athletic complex on 71 acres of forestland several miles west of campus. As part of this construction, a reforestation program was initiated to offset the impact of land disturbed by the project. Seedlings, small caliper trees, shrubs, and indigenous ground cover seed were planted outside the limits of disturbance covering an area of approximately 5.8 acres and on the vertical slopes surrounding the complex.

The contractor eradicated dominant invasive species of shrubs and vines from the reforestation area. The University monitors and maintains the reforestation area in accordance with the planting plan in the construction documents that are on file in the facilities department.
