CEU FAQs for Edcamp Organizers and Participants

We know as an Edcamp organizer your plate is already full to provide the best Edcamp for your participants. Thus, we work with you to provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to your participants with the least amount of stress and extra work for you. We do have some standards we have to meet to ensure the awarding of CEUs for your participants. Review this CEU Information Page for Organizers for more information and the organizers' role in providing CEUs for Edcamp participants.

What is a CEU?

A CEU is a Continuing Education Unit. “The primary purpose of the CEU is to provide a permanent record of the educational accomplishments of an individual who has completed one or more significant non-credit educational experiences.” (IACET, What is a CEU?, n.d.) The Micro-credentials for Professional Learning at Loyola University Maryland follows the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) standards to award Continuing Education Units for certain professional learning. As per the IACET standards, “One IACET Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction.” (IACET, What is a CEU?, n.d.). Through Loyola’s accreditation through Middle States, our compliance to the IACET standards and our partnership with the Edcamp Foundation, we are able to award CEUs to participants of Edcamp Foundation approved Edcamps.

Organizer's Responsibilities: Before the Edcamp

Before your Edcamp, we will need to collect some logistical information including the name, date, location, format, and length. Before your even, you must:

  1. Complete the Loyola Edcamp CEU Registration Form; and
  2. Share the CEU Opportunity Information Email and MCx Edcamp Foundation Registration Link with your participants.

Organizer's Responsibilities: After the Edcamp

After the Edcamp, we will need some information to award the CEUs to participants, such as your participant attendance and session board (see Participant Attendance Records and Session Board Submissions for more information). Within 30 days of your Edcamp:

  1. Complete the Loyola Edcamp CEU Completion Form; and
  2. Send a CEU Opportunity Reminder Email to your attendees about registering for Edcamp CEUs and completing the Edcamp CEU Reflection Survey in the CE.Loyola.edu MCx Edcamp Foundation Course (See Participant Registration Steps for more information).

Participant's Responsibilities

To get CEUs for Edcamp participation, attendees of your Edcamp need to complete a few items. Prior to a certificate being distributed, participants’ need to:

  1. Register for the CEU opportunities through the MCx Edcamp Foundation Registration Link (See Participant Registration Steps for more information)
  2. Attend the Edcamp, ensuring any sign-in/check-in procedures are completed; and
  3. Complete the Edcamp CEU Reflection Survey in the CE.Loyola.edu MCx Edcamp Foundation Course within 30 days after the Edcamp. (See Submission Time Limits for Edcamp Reflection Surveys for more information).

Participant Registration Steps

Registration for CEU credit for participants will be available before the Edcamp, on the day of the Edcamp, and for 30 days after the Edcamp. Once registered for CEU credit, participants will receive log-in credentials to access the MCx Edcamp Foundation Course in CE.Loyola.edu. Within this course, participants must complete the Edcamp CEU Reflection Survey. This survey cannot be completed before the Edcamp event and must be submitted within 30 days of the Edcamp.

Participant Attendance Records

To award CEUs for participants, we have to verify that a participant attended the Edcamp. To do this, Edcamp organizers must submit a digital record of the attendance sign-in sheets after the Edcamp. Because various methods are used to check-in participants such as sign-in sheets, Eventbrite check-in, attendance forms, etc., you may submit any type of digital document that displays the attendance record.

Participants' Privacy and Information

Participants’ privacy and information will not be used beyond verification of attendance for an award of CEUs. We keep participants’ privacy and information confidential and in a secure Loyola University Maryland supported drive. Participants’ names and any other information will not be distributed to third-party vendors. Participants who choose to register for CEUs through Loyola’s Continuing Education platform will have to agree to separate Terms of Use and Privacy Policy statements upon registration.

Session Board Submission

Since Edcamps are typically unconferences, the content and specific breakout session topics are determined by attendees on the day of the Edcamp. To comply with accreditation standards (IACET), we need an image or a document of the breakout session topics from your Edcamp. We understand that various methods are used to create an Edcamp session board and we will accept any type of Session Board submission (image, spreadsheet, PDF, document, link, etc.) that shows the topics from the day.

Time Limits for Reflection Survey Submissions

Participants who are registered for Edcamp CEUs have 30 days to complete the Edcamp Reflection Survey in the CE.Loyola.edu MCx Edcamp Foundation Course.
