Center for Innovation in Urban Education Launches Faculty Speaker Series

Loyola University Maryland’s Center for Innovation in Urban Education (CIUE) is launching a Faculty Speaker Series to highlight faculty’s research work through a series of panel discussions, presentations, and lectures.

Through the series, the CIUE hopes to draw attention to the expansive work of Loyola’s School of Education faculty in collaboration with Baltimore-area schools.

“The CIUE Faculty Speaker Series is a chance to showcase the work of faculty and the rich, varied partnerships between Loyola’s School of Education and the Baltimore community,” said Rob Helfenbein, Ph.D., associate dean and professor of curriculum studies. “With urban education as part of our mission and a focus on impact in Baltimore, the School of Education hopes to push the city’s continuing but complicated conversation on equity, opportunity, and social justice for all its people.”

The first Faculty Speaker Series presentation, “Baltimore Based Work: Research in the Context of Urban Classrooms,” will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall West. A pre-event reception will be from 5:15 - 6 p.m. in the McGuire Atrium.

The first presentation in the series will feature three faculty members from the School of Education’s teacher education department featuring work rooted in the reality of Baltimore City Schools. Adell Cothorne, clinical instructor, Margarita Gómez, Ph.D., assistant professor of literacy education, and Mark Lewis, Ph.D., associate professor of literacy education, will highlight how the School of Education faculty are utilizing resources of the University to engage with the community in a meaningful way.

Additional events in the series include:

• “Postdoctoral Teaching Fellows Examine Teaching in Urban Spaces,” Monday, Nov. 12, 2018. A pre-event reception will be held from 5:15 - 6 p.m. in the McGuire Atrium, with the presentation to follow from 6 - 7:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall West, Andrew White Student Center, Evergreen Campus.

• “What is Policing Trying to Teach us,” Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018. A pre-event reception will be held from 5:30 - 6:15 p.m. in the McGuire Atrium, with the presentation to follow from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in McGuire Hall West, Andrew White Student Center, Evergreen Campus.

• “What do African American Ninth Graders Discuss During Individual School Counseling Sessions,” Spring 2019 (TBD).
