I am Kelly Michelo, S.J., a Zambian Jesuit priest who until June 2020, has been serving as School President of St. Ignatius College, a Jesuit Secondary School in Lusaka, Zambia. During my tenure as school president, I was responsible for restructuring the school from a private school to a Jesuit school, inspiring the Jesuit education tradition. Prior to being school president of St. Ignatius College, I was Parish priest of Chikuni Parish and director of various integrated projects in the rural areas of Chikuni Mission, Zambia. The projects addressed social development particularly HIV/AIDS, rural education development, natural resources management, livelihood promotion, entrepreneurship development, environmental issues and gender mainstreaming. All these projects aimed at uplifting the lives of vulnerable women, young people and children.
I have received my Masters of Philosophy in Development Studies from the University of Cape Town. I also have a BA in Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology, Peace Institute and International Relations, Nairobi, Kenya, as well as a BA (Hon) in Philosophy from University of Zimbabwe, Harare, Zimbabwe. I have experience in social policy, leadership, governance, development and public policy and written several articles around these areas. Until July 2020, Kelly had been a board member of the Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR), a Catholic nonprofit policy think tank in Zambia for more than 15 years and a key member of the African Jesuit AIDS Network secretariat based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Through the Doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Baltimore, I would like to understand the art of policy-making, public engagement, project management, and institution building both in the public and private sectors. With skills gained during this study, I would like to advance policy research in academia and offer advice in policy making, policy analysis and public engagement to non-profit and public service. His research interests are in social policy, global policy, socio-economic development, cross-cultural analysis, leadership and institution building.
I enjoy running, going to the gym, walking, playing golf, and just about anything that gets me outdoors, but spending time with the community members and friends is paramount. I am very excited to join your community and will be thrilled to meet you all.
