Diversity Conversations

Recently, Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., along with Acting President Susan M. Donovan, Ph.D., Loyola's vice presidents, and the deans of Loyola College, the Sellinger School, and the School of Education have been contemplating how we, the Loyola community, may best address diversity and inclusiveness from an institutional perspective. While Loyola has made significant strides in diversifying its student body, faculty, staff, and administration over the past decade, several important items and areas require our further efforts and attention. In particular, we must better appreciate the richness of Loyola’s diverse community and be mindful of our duty to ensure that creation of an inclusive campus climate lies at the forefront of our thinking, our work, and our actions.

Mindful that our Jesuit, Catholic heritage calls us to prepare for learning, leadership, and service in a diverse and changing world, Sheilah Horton, Ph.D., vice president for student development and dean of students, along with the Rev. Tim Brown, S.J., associate professor of law and social responsibility and special assistant for mission and ministry, will engage members of our community regarding their thoughts, observations, and experiences of diversity at Loyola. Dr. Horton, a longstanding member and former chair of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities Conference on Diversity and Equity, and Fr. Brown have studied and gathered best practices and will host a series of structured conversations with various Loyola stakeholders beginning in November 2015. The president’s Cabinet participated in this exercise recently, and found it a challenging, and enlightening, opportunity to carefully reflect on Loyola’s current climate.

The insights and knowledge gained through these conversations will inform the work of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee and work groups, as they develop Loyola’s next strategic plan, and will be shared with Fr. Linnane upon his return to campus in January. The Loyola community is invited to participate in this process by contacting the Dean of Students office at 410-617-2842 or cdharris@loyola.edu to sign up for one of the sessions.
