Welcome from the Department Chair!
Come on in! Welcome to the website for the Department of Psychology at Loyola University Maryland. My name is Matthew Kirkhart. I am the chair of the department and, hopefully, your helpful guide on your journey through out website. The Psychology Department at Loyola University Maryland is made up of a group of fantastic faculty, administrators, and staff who are all committed to the strong educational mission of the university. And with this in mind, I would like to start off by introducing the newest members of our staff and faculty.
First, I want to welcome Ms. Elizabeth Stover to our staff. She started in November of 2014 and has been performing several important administrative duties, not the least of which is providing logistical support for all the externships completed by our undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral students. This is an extremely large, and invaluable, service to our department and our students! Welcome Elizabeth!
And now for the welcoming of the new full-time faculty! Two alumni of our own doctoral program, Dr. Katherine Hadley Cornell and Dr. Cara Jacobson, are joining our full-time faculty this year. Dr. Cornell has been supervising our graduate students at the Loyola Clinical Centers off-and-on for several years, and we are very happy to have her joining us as a full-time affiliate assistant professor. Likewise, we are happy to be adding Dr. Jacobson to our full-time faculty. She will be teaching a number and variety of courses for us, but she is especially known for her work in couples therapy. Dr. Crystal Willoughby also joins out full-time faculty this year after teaching several graduate courses for our department over the past couple of years. She is very active in community work and service, and in the classroom specializes in teaching courses in assessment. We are also pleased to add Dr. Emily Dow to our full-time faculty. Like Dr. Willoughby, Dr. Dow has taught several courses for us in the past on a part-time basis. She is an expert in undergraduate education and teaches a variety of courses for us, including courses in research methodology and developmental psychology. The department is also pleased to welcome two new full-time faculty to our ranks, Dr. Ana Navarro Cebrian and Dr. Andrew Futterman. Dr. Cebrian is serving as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2015-2016 academic year. A cognitive psychologist, Dr. Cebrian will be teaching a variety of cognitive and biological psychology courses. Dr. Futterman enters our ranks as a tenured Full Professor coming to us from Holy Cross after having a long and successful career at that institution. Although impossible to sum up in a sentence, Dr. Futterman has focused on a number of things during his career. Currently, his focus is on a number of psychological issues associated with aging, and on collaborating with the Biology department on the Health Professions Advisory Committee.
The department is a vibrant community of teachers, scholars, clinicians, students and staff united in their dedication to the highest standards in education and training for future psychologists and the promotion of the discipline of psychology. Throughout this site you will find information about the exciting research, leadership, advocacy and training activities that our faculty and students engage in every day. The best way to discover these things is to click on the various program and faculty pages. Be sure to check out the link to the Loyola Clinical Centers as well, especially if you are interested in the graduate programs we offer.
We hope that you find what you are looking for on our site, whether that is information about the psychology major or our graduate programs, information about current research opportunities, updates on your favorite faculty and alumni, or general information about the field of psychology and Loyola University Maryland. If you cannot find what you need, or you have ideas or information to contribute to our site, please contact Ms. Traci Martino at 410-617-2175 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
