Internship
The clinical internship occurs during the student’s first year of study. It is an opportunity to work closely with one of Loyola’s clinical faculty developing therapeutic and diagnostic skills. Students are exposed to different disabilities spanning both pediatric and geriatric populations. Typically, students are placed at one of the clinical centers for 2-3 days per week and spend an additional day accruing clinical hours in a specially designed lab-type class that focuses one semester on adult neurogenic disorders, and the other semester on clinical audiology. Student progress is closely monitored, providing weekly feedback and formal conferences at the midterm and again at the end of the semester.
Externship
Second-year students transition from the Loyola Clinical Centers to one of the diverse settings offered in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. Equipped with foundational clinical skills and several semesters of academic classes, students apply this knowledge in their externship clinical affiliations. During their second graduate year, students can expect two different externship experiences – typically one that is medically based and one that is focused on education. The goal is to provide students with a well-rounded clinical experience to meet and exceed the standards set forth by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Throughout each clinical experience, students gain expertise with clients of different ages, diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds and a variety of speech-language and hearing disorders. Students are also engaged in professional report writing, multidisciplinary meetings, parent education, and screenings.
