  • Moodle Assignment Grader Issues

In the latest version of Moodle (3.1), the core build of Moodle received a new assignment grader interface. This interface allows both Word documents and Adobe PDF files to be converted into an annotate-able file where feedback can be placed directly on the students submission. While the ability to produce in-line annotation is a necessary innovation, the system has limitations that are causing consternation when trying to grade student submissions. Many faculty have reported that the system often freezes during the grading process, and the only way to get out of the "stuck" screen is to either refresh or close the browser window.

Due to the fact that this is part of the core product build, it presents a complicated problem without an easy solution. While we wait on a more comprehensive solution within Moodle, we are working ways to make the system more resilient and responsive. We are continuing to evaluate alternatives that will alleviate some of these issues. If you encounter any of these issues in the short-term, please contact Client Services (x5555 or atOTS@loyola.edu) so we can deliver that information to the appropriate support channel. Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue.

Tips and Tricks for Assignment Grader workarounds:

  1. Click on a student, wait a few seconds, then click on the next student or even go out of the page, and come back to the first student. The pdf should immediately load.
  2. Click on the refresh button on your browser as soon as the assignment greater seems to stall out. This action could help load the page correctly.
  3. Use the assignment grader during periods of reduced server traffic, such as evenings and weekends.
  4. Used to "download all submissions" functionality within the assignment interface. This will allow you to download the entire collection of student submissions and grade each of them offline. You can always return to the assignment greater at that point and apply a score for a student.
  5. Use the import/export feature within the course gradebook to export your graded items, assign the score to the Excel spreadsheet, and then re-upload the newly assigned grades.

Having students convert the file to PDF prior to submission will help mitigate this ongoing issue. The issue occurs when the system attempts to convert the file to PDF, so submitting it in this format originally allows the system to process faster.

  • No More Clickers! Welcome to PollEverywhere

TurningPoint was Loyola University Maryland's hardware solution to live polling previously. Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control, we will have to retire these clickers from use in the future. Poll Everywhere is a simple application that works well for live audiences using mobile devices like phones. People participate by visiting a fast mobile-friendly web page for your event, sending text messages, or using Twitter. For more information, head to our Poll Everywhere support page.
