Student Employment

The Department of Recreation and Wellness employs between 150-200 student employees each year for both direct hire and work study positions. Employment at the Fitness and Aquatics Center is a great way to get involved on-campus, meet new people, and learn new leadership skills!

We are accepting applications on a rolling basis and will review submissions as positions become available.

Student Position Descriptions

Note: Not all positions are available for Summer Employment.

Basecamp Attendant

Provides program support for Outdoor Adventure programs, including program registration, marketing, facilitating equipment rentals, and general office and organizational tasks.  Experience with Outdoor Adventure programs preferred and Microsoft Office skills preferred. Reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.

Building Supervisor

Responsible for the daily operations of the Fitness and Aquatic Center to include: opening and closing of the facility, employee supervision to ensure the facility is staffed appropriately, on-site risk manager, responder for all medical emergencies, policy enforcement, and administrative support to full-time administrator team. Proficiency with multi-tasking required. Microsoft Office skills required. Individuals with current ARC Professional Rescuer, CPR, Basic First Aid, and AED certifications are preferred. Reports to the Associate Director.

Rockwall Attendant

Responsible for the safety of all climbers. Teaches proper climbing and belaying skills. Belays children ages 7 and up as well as a wide variety of others. Training is provided, but experience at the Department of Recreation and Wellness climbing wall is preferred. Reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.

Fitness Attendant

Responsible to provide a safe, clean, and fun atmosphere for our members and guests who frequent the Fitness Center. Maintain safety of fitness center participants by enforcing area policies, promoting safe exercise technique, and provide general assistance with cardiovascular and strength training equipment. Consultants are charged with greeting and engaging members and guests to create a positive and productive exercise environment that inspires exercise adherence. No experience necessary. Reports to Assistant Director, Fitness and Wellness.

Group Exercise Instructor

Responsible for designing and leading members through safe and effective group exercise classes. Group Exercise Instructors must have extensive knowledge in: proper fitness programming, safety, participant motivation, and communication.  Nationally recognized group exercise certifications are required. Reports to the Assistant Director, Fitness and Wellness. (For more information about obtaining group exercise certifications, contact the Assistant Director, Fitness and Wellness.)

Intramural Sports Supervisor

Responsible for the on-site supervision of intramural contests, the evaluation of officials, and providing overall event management and support to game officials. “Veteran” officials who have demonstrated skills, knowledge, and leadership preferred. Reports to the Assistant Director, Sport Programs.

Intramural Sports Official

Responsible for officiating and scorekeeping a variety of team sports throughout the course of the year. No experience necessary, but preferred. In-house training provided.  Must be available to work evenings and weekends.  Reports to the Assistant Director, Sport Programs.

Lifeguard

Responsible for the supervision and education to swimmers, facility supervision,  facility maintenance, and administration of the department emergency action plan. Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification or the equivalent, a current American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification, a current American Red Cross First Aid certification, or the equivalents, and be in good physical condition (as determined by a pre-requisite skills test) is required. Also responsible for cleaning and general maintenance, including rust removal of Aquatic Center equipment and facilities. Reports to the Assistant Director, Operations and Aquatics.

Marketing Assistant

Responsible for the planning and development of marketing materials, provide resources for departmental use to include social media avenues, design and distribute publications and other media formats, as well as conduct photography assignments. Photography and/or graphic design experience preferred. Reports to the Assistant Director, Fitness and Wellness.

Member Services Representative

Provides service to prospective and current members of the facility, sells memberships, locker rentals and assists in program registration. Responsible for monitoring member/guest authorized access and directs visitors to designated locations throughout the facility. Willing to learn about facilities, policies and program offerings as well as conduct facility tours. Strong emphasis is placed on customer service and interpersonal skills. Microsoft Office skills preferred. Reports to the Associate Director.

Outdoor Gear Assistant

Responsible for maintenance of all equipment for the Outdoor Adventure Experience (OAE) program, including taking inventory, repairing equipment, preparing equipment for OAE trips and rentals, and ensuring all equipment is returned from trips and rentals.  Experience working with outdoor equipment is preferred. Reports to the Assistant Director, Outdoor Adventures.
