As a part of the Executive MBA Class of 2011’s final class, Orioles legend Cal Ripken, Jr., president and CEO of Ripken Baseball Inc., joined the class as a guest lecturer in Affiliate Instructor Lance Weaver’s course: Power and Influence.
Ripken retired from baseball in 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Since then, he has built a business that includes a one-of-a-kind baseball complex that serves as headquarters of an international youth baseball program, as well as home to the Aberdeen IronBirds—the Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Ripken’s presentation included a discussion of the personal attributes that propelled him to the Baseball Hall of Fame and continue to play an important role as he builds a new legacy in business.
“He was very open and engaging and was honest about where he got some lucky breaks and also where he made mistakes. It was interesting to hear such a renowned entrepreneur reflect on a nontraditional path to success,” said Guy Lambert, director of manufacturing segment, Waste Management, Inc., EMBA `11.
Throughout the course, Weaver brought in a series of guests to discuss the role of power and influence on business operations through the eyes of the executives who wield them. In addition to learning from Ripken, students heard firsthand from business leaders who have seen their way through periods of historic opportunity and difficulty—including Loyola Trustee Frank P. Bramble, Sr., director of Bank of America Corporation and chair of its Enterprise Risk Committee; Erik Frywald, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Nalco Holding Company, the sustainability services company that aided BP in cleaning up the Gulf spill; and Loyola Trustees, Ken Boehl, ’76, MBA ’81, and John Cochran, ’73, both members of the management team that grew MBNA, then a regional credit card program, into the largest independent credit card issuer in the world.
The Executive MBA Class of 2011 graduates on May 21 at Loyola’s 159th Commencement Exercises.
