When it comes to deciding which graduate business program is right for you, there’s no substitute for experience—classroom experience. That’s why the Sellinger School’s Professional MBA program began offering MBA Test Drives last year, an opportunity for prospective students to sit in on a Professional MBA class, meet current students and faculty, and even participate in classroom discussions and debates.

“Our information sessions do a great job of introducing students to the nuts and bolts of application and curriculum requirements, but can’t quite capture what it’s really like to be a student in the program,” says Barbara Coward, admissions coordinator for graduate business programs. “The Test Drives offer that experience—prospective students see themselves being a part of the course, and recognize the takeaways they’d be able to apply at work after analyzing a business case or presenting a group project.”

The Sellinger School has two Test Drive programs set for Fall 2011: one on Nov. 2 in Timonium and the other on Nov. 10 in Columbia.

Guests registering for the Nov. 2 session will have the opportunity to choose between attending a course in Special Topics in Management: Personal Effectiveness in the Implementation of Strategy with John Everett, affiliate assistant professor of management, or Financial Markets and Institutions with Mark Johnson, Ph.D., assistant professor of finance. Guests registering for the Nov. 10 session will have the opportunity to choose between Special Topics in Marketing: Marketing and Social Media with Jennifer Gunner, affiliate professor of marketing, and Risk Assessment and Process Strategies with Michael Herring, affiliate professor of information systems and operations management.

Both begin with an information session from 5:30 – 6:20 p.m., followed by the first hour of a select class from 6:30-7:30p.m. Participants will regroup at 7:30 p.m. to discuss their experiences, insights, and questions over pizza. Participants are encouraged to engage in the discussions that take place. Faculty members who participated in last year’s MBA Test Drives report that their classes were happy to engage with visitors and even more interactive than usual.

“Most of our students are looking at several schools,” says Coward. “The test drives give them a chance to introduce themselves, get to know their future classmates, see the diversity of companies and professions represented, and learn whether our culture is the right fit for them. We’ve had several students’ mention the Test Drive is what solidified their choice to enroll at Loyola.”

Both the Professional MBA and Master of Science in Finance programs are now accepting applications for Spring 2012. The priority deadline to apply is Dec. 1, with applications being accepted on a rolling basis as space permits thereafter.
