Students in the Sellinger School’s Emerging Leaders MBA—the School’s first full-time graduate program, now in its second-year—traveled to San Francisco, Calif., in December to explore business models and engage with business leaders through corporate site visits in the nation’s leading center of innovation and technology.
During the five-day trip students visited with executives from Salesforce.com, Cisco Systems Inc., Artisan Partners, KIVA Microfunds, and Glam Media. Hot topics included innovation, social enterprise, social responsibility, information systems, technology, leadership, and sustainable value creation.
Salesforce.com, an enterprise cloud computing company, left students buzzing—not only about the company’s presentation, but also about its leadership.
“The way employees talked about their CEO, Marc Benioff, and his vision made it clear that leadership really sets the tone for the entire company,” said Rachel Plourde, ELMBA ’12. “If your CEO is a visionary and an innovator, it encourages a more creative and concerned culture. It was very exciting to see such a positive culture so tightly aligned with the vision of the CEO and to see how that translated in the success of the company."
A surprise and highlight for many of the students was a private dinner and wine tasting hosted by Dick Fredericks, a Loyola trustee and father of Will Fredericks, ’13. The evening with Fredericks focused on taking chances and making the most of opportunities.
Fredericks gave students a tour of his vineyard as well as of his life as a former Georgetown classmate of President Bill Clinton; grower for Turley Wine Cellars at Ridgeview Vineyards LLC; managing director at Main Management LLC, an Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) pioneer; and U.S. Ambassador to Switzerland from 1999–2001.
Fredericks then introduced guest speaker Jerry Baldwin, owner of J. Baldwin Vineyards and original founder of Starbucks, who discussed how his own career moved from coffee to wine.
