Food. From our biological needs, to cultural conventions, to globalization, to the Eucharist, few things are more central to our existence. The Spring 2009 Humanities Symposium will investigate numerous nuances, complications and joys associated with food as we study Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.
Grappling with the “omnivore’s dilemma” has made us who we are. The way we think, write, create, pray, philosophize, organize, and commune, is all connected to food. The very nature of our humanity is integrally linked to what we eat and with whom we share it. By communing with food, we exchange ideas, construct identity, form traditions, create beliefs, and advance our civilization. The keynote address, American Cuisine: A Revolution and an Identity Crisis, will be presented by Lynne Rossetto Kasper, host of The Splendid Table from American Public Media on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. in McGuire Hall. |
