Latin American and Latino Studies minor Patrick Diamond keeps busy these days taking various LALS courses. Patrick also continues to move up through the Spanish program taking “SN203: Introduction to Reading Literature," this semester. At the same time, he is focusing on issues confronting the Latin American and US Latino peoples in ML362D: “The Early Latino Experience." Outside of class, Patrick is passionate about developing platforms for the emerging field in “microloans.” Thus, it should come as no surprise that he has just received a 2012 Kolvenbach Summer Research Grant to investigate Alternative Financial Services with Home Connection -- a program of Saint Vincent de Paul of Baltimore. We look forward to seeing how this research will impact on his studies of Dependency Theory in Latin America, a theory which for some is passé and for others still represents a viable paradigm for understanding economic inequities in the Western Hemisphere. There is no doubt that Patrick is on to something very creative in understanding economics in the Americas.
