Understanding the Link: Homosexuality, Gender Identity and the DSM
This paper will review the historical and present notions of identity, in relation to homosexuality and gender, within the mental health profession; discuss the link between homosexuality and gender identity; as well as contemplate the possible future of Gender Identity Disorder as it pertains to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Edition (DSM-5). In addition, the question of ethicality in maintaining Gender Identity Disorder (GID) in any form in the DSM-5 will be discussed.
