Darby came to Loyola to study physics with ambitions of enrolling in the Pre-Med Track. After discernment through her Messina courses—and thanks to the mentorship and guidance of her academic advisor, Paola Pascual-Ferra, Ph.D., assistant professor of communication—Darby was able to find her true passion for public health writing and communication. Feeling inspired, she declared an interdisciplinary major in communication and writing. When she graduates from Loyola, Darby plans to continue her education and earn her master’s degree in public health, with dreams to one day work in international family planning and have her work published in academic journals. While at Loyola, Darby decided to go beyond her comfort zone and study abroad in Lyon, France. “Exercising my independence allowed me to grow as a person, and I truly feel better equipped to face challenges in the future,” she says. A member of Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, Darby has an internship at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health through which she has been afforded the opportunity to travel to Uganda to network with professionals in the medical industry.
