Biography
Chris Blakley (they, them, theirs) is a historian and the author of Empire of Brutality: Enslaved People and Animals in the British Atlantic World (Louisiana State University Press, 2023). They are a former postdoctoral fellow of the Center for Seventeenth and Eighteenth-Century Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. Their articles have appeared in History and Philosophy of Medicine, Animal History, Early American Studies, Terrae Incognitae, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, The Social History of Alcohol and Drugs, International Review of Environmental History, and Emotions: History, Culture, Society. Their research has been supported by fellowships and grants from The Harry Ransom Center of University of Texas at Austin, Kenneth Spencer Research Library at University of Kansas, The McNeil Center for Early American Studies at University of Pennsylvania, and Dumbarton Oaks. They earned a PhD in History from Rutgers.
