Program Benefits for Empowered Scholars

As an Empowered Scholar, you’ll gain access to support and resources designed to help you thrive academically, personally, and professionally:

  • Substantial financial support: A renewable, need-based scholarship of up to $15,000 annually for four years, plus a $600 stipend to purchase a personal laptop for coursework and research.
  • Dedicated academic guidance: Two specially designed, linked Messina courses during your first year; ongoing advising that integrates core, major, and Empowered Scholars requirements; and small-group sessions at The Study for tutoring and academic support.
  • A close-knit learning community: Join a cohort of fellow Empowered Scholars who share classes, extracurricular experiences, and mentoring opportunities—building a network that lasts throughout college and beyond.
  • Career and professional development: Access exclusive workshops and training, such as:
    • Career readiness programming through the Rizzo Career Center
    • Professional skills workshops with SC&H Consulting
    • Invitations to Maryland Technology Council events, regional/national scientific conferences, and industry partner networking sessions
  • Recognition and distinction:
    • Upon graduation, Empowered Scholars will be honored at the STEM Academic Excellence event in the spring of their senior year and will receive a distinctive Empowered Scholars cord to wear at Commencement—recognition of their achievement, leadership, and dedication in STEM.
    • Participation in this highly competitive program adds significant value to your résumé, signaling to employers and graduate schools that you are prepared to excel in the STEM workforce.
  • Alignment with Loyola’s Jesuit values: Rooted in Jesuit tradition, the program emphasizes academic excellence, holistic development, community engagement, and discernment—helping you grow not just as a scholar, but as a person and leader.
