Guiding Principles & Mission

The work of SWAG is rooted in our Jesuit values and focused on supporting and enhancing the wellbeing of individuals and the community.

Guiding Principles

The Guiding Principles of the Student Wellbeing Action Group (SWAG) are:

  • Cura Personalis: We believe fostering mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness is essential to caring for the whole person, a core Jesuit value.
  • Equity and Inclusion: We are committed to fostering a campus community in which wellbeing is inclusive, and where we intentionally uplift those who have historically and socially faced barriers to access, support, and belonging.
  • Community of Care: We are committed to cross-campus collaboration and shared responsibility for student well-being to improve outcomes in all areas of student life, including academic success.
  • Transparency and Trust: We promote open communication to build trust, improve access to resources, and enhance the effectiveness of our initiatives.
  • Policy and Advocacy: We seek to proactively address environmental risks related to wellbeing through systemic and policy-level change.

 Our Mission Statement

The Student Wellbeing Action Group (SWAG) at Loyola University Maryland is dedicated to advancing a culture of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and cura apostolica (care for the community) by promoting holistic well-being across the 8 Dimensions of Wellness: emotional, physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, occupational, environmental, and financial.

Informed by Jesuit, Catholic values and a deep commitment to equity, we work to create an inclusive, wellness-centered campus where all students can flourish. We do this by supporting student wellbeing through education including addressing misconceptions, and fostering a deeper understanding of available resources; improving collaboration across departments; examining environmental and systemic contributors to wellbeing and safety; and advocating for policies that sustain a thriving community where individual wellbeing and collective care are deeply interconnected and intentionally nurtured.
