Loyola University Maryland’s award-winning Department of Communication will offer two new specializations in the University’s online Master of Arts in Emerging Media program. The new specializations—Content Development and Strategy and Digital Culture—aim to expand and customize students’ educational experience, helping graduates stand out in today’s competitive employment market.

“Adding these specializations on top of our existing Health Communication specialization offers our students several focused paths through our curriculum,” said Greg Hoplamazian, Ph.D., associate professor and academic director of the Emerging Media program. “What remains consistent is that our courses will always focus on what is new, and what is next.”

The Content Development and Strategy specialization includes courses that train students how to craft communication strategies utilizing a range of digital platforms, as well as gain experience planning and developing engaging content.

The Digital Culture specialization features a curriculum that challenges students to understand and anticipate the way new communication technologies are shaping personal and professional lives, and the consequences these new tools have for social and political engagement.

“We are excited for the opportunities these new specializations bring for our Emerging Media master’s students to go even more in-depth into a specific area of interest in their graduate studies,” said Sara Magee, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the department. “This showcases a great strength of our program, to reflect on the constantly changing needs of this field and then adapt our courses and content to provide the most beneficial training and skills that our students need to be successful in their careers.”

Designed for students of any academic background, the 33-credit master’s program can be completed in as little as 12 – 15 months. Choosing a specialization is optional and students may add, change, or drop, a specialization any time before graduation.

The Emerging Media program teaches students to assess innovation and trends in communication, develop and execute strategies to capitalize on new media opportunities, and evaluate their impact at every level, from personal to global.

The deadline to apply for admission to the program is May 1, 2023, for summer courses. For fall courses, the deadline to apply is Aug. 1, 2023.
