Loyola students from the department of visual and performing arts will perform the musical Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown this March. The production is directed by James Bunzli, MFA, Ph.D., associate professor of visual and performing arts (theater). Tickets are available on the Loyola events ticketing website, starting at $10 for adults and $8 for senior citizens (65+).

The show will be held in the McManus Theatre at these times:

  • Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m.
  • Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m.

The show is based on the award-winning film by Pedro Almodóvar, which was later adapted as a stage musical and book by Jeffrey Lang, with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. The musical is set in 1980s Madrid, following a group of women through their complex and hilarious relationships with the men in their lives.

“The show is a delightful and faithful adaptation of the acclaimed 1988 film of the same name,” said Bunzli. “The story of Pepa and the other women is both heartfelt and hilarious. It takes us on a crazy journey through the streets of post-Franco Madrid. It has been an absolute delight to work with this talented cast of 15 actor/singers and a dedicated crew in bringing this story to life.”

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is presented though a special arrangement with Music Theater International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

The show is presented by the Evergreen Players, Loyola’s theater group, and is one of many events hosted by the department of visual and performing arts this spring.
