Ben, from Olney, Md., is majoring in biochemistry and is on the Pre-Med track in Loyola’s Pre-Health Programs. On campus, Ben works for Event Services and is involved with Health Outreach Baltimore and the Student Health Advisory Council. He describes Maiju Lehmijoki Wetzel, Ph.D., professor of theology and director of Loyola’s Pre-Health Programs, as a critical source of guidance for him since he transferred to Loyola: “Dr. Wetzel has helped me find volunteer, work, and internship opportunities that have given me a solid foundation for continuing my career in the health sciences.” One of these opportunities is the research Ben conducted on yeast genomes with Lisa Scheifele, Ph.D., associate professor of biology. Loyola’s Pre-Health Programs is one of his favorite aspects of his academic experience because “it offers incredible guidance and helps provide a personalized approach to your education.” And of his Loyola experience, he says, “The Jesuit concept of cura personalis has opened my eyes to different aspects of life and different definitions of the word success.”
