Rev. Sanil Mayilkunnel, S.J., is a Jesuit priest from Kerala, India. He earned his bachelor’s in Psychology at the Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala, India. His passion for psychology blossomed during his undergraduate studies, and he was inspired to continue working towards his doctoral degree at Loyola after obtaining his Master’s in Clinical Psychology from Loyola, in 2019. Fr. Mayilkunnel realized he needed more than compassion to serve others, so he wanted to pursue psychology at the doctoral level to “improve my competence and effectiveness in serving people at the margins of society.” The Psy.D. program includes a variety of clinical training experiences, but he was “particularly touched and inspired” by his work in a community mental health center because he was able to “experience firsthand how psychology as a field can substantially change people’s lives.” He considers the clinical training offered by the program invaluable. Fr. Mayilkunnel was encouraged by the “committed staff, enthusiastic fellow students, and a very supportive administrative staff, who all want to make a difference in the lives of those they serve.” After obtaining his doctorate, he wants to return to India to work with marginalized groups and bridge the gap between the advancements in psychology offered in the U.S. and India.
