Recognize Bias

When you report incidents of bias, you help us take a major step forward in becoming the community we aspire to be. No one should be mistreated because of their race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, or disability—and it’s our shared responsibility to stop discrimination and bias when we see it. We can work together to build a safer, healthier, stronger, more respectful Loyola community.

Recognize Bias Related Behaviors

Bias related behaviors are intentional or unintentional actions against someone because of their actual or perceived:

  • Age
  • Gender/Gender Identity
  • Religion
  • Race
  • Ethnic or national origin
  • Sexual orientation
  • Disability
  • Other targeted aspects of one’s identity

Reject Bias Related Behaviors

  • Offensive graffiti
  • Degrading or offensive images
  • Derogatory or offensive verbal or written comments
  • Offensive jokes
  • Outing someone’s sexual orientation
  • Inappropriate references to one’s race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation

Bias related behaviors/actions occur (whether intentional or unintentional) because of:

  • Ignorance
  • Insensitivity
  • Peer pressure
  • Fear
  • Lack of understanding
  • Stereotypes
  • Hatred

Report, Don’t Reinforce Bias Related Behaviors

Bias related behaviors are reinforced when you…

  • Remain silent by not reporting incidents and/or confronting the behavior
  • Laugh at the comments and/or jokes
  • Contribute or provide additional verbal comments
  • Encourage the inappropriate behavior
  • Provide excuses for the behavior
