2025 Summer Institute – Community Environmental Science
Traveling to Stony Run, a waterway that is part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, participants explored the natural area, applying their knowledge of stream chemistry and macroinvertebrate biology to the surroundings. During the three-day institute, participants learned about the civic principles inherent in environmental action, the history and science of Baltimore's water system, and uses of Texas Instruments scientific measurement tools and graphing calculators in STEM classrooms.
Participants engaged in sessions led by Loyola faculty and community partners on topics including STEM discourse practices, environmental science in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, and the integration of technology-based measurement tools in STEM instruction. The institute emphasized experiential and inquiry-based learning, collaborative lesson design, and presentation of lessons with peer feedback supporting professional collaboration and refinement of instructional practices.
