Loyola named School of National Service for commitment to AmeriCorps alumni

Loyola University Maryland Forbes Best Value College 2017

Loyola University Maryland provides new benefits to incoming graduate students who are AmeriCorps alumni. The University became one of 11 institutions in Maryland to be named as a School of National Service for its commitment to alumni from the national service program.

As an AmeriCorps School of National Service, Loyola offers a $1,000 matching grant—$500 per semester for the first two semesters—to AmeriCorps volunteers who are accepted and enroll in a Loyola graduate degree program beginning with the 2022-23 academic year, which started on June 1, 2022. AmeriCorps volunteers are now also eligible for a graduate application fee waiver.

“Providing a matching grant to graduate students who have served as volunteers in our communities fulfills our mission as a university, which emphasizes service to others,” said Danielle J. Ballantyne, director of graduate financial aid at Loyola. “In return, AmeriCorps volunteers bring leadership experience and community service to our university. It’s a win for everyone.”

Loyola has a long commitment to service and civic engagement, making it a clear choice for service-minded students like AmeriCorps alumni. Read more about Loyola’s commitment to civic engagement.

More about AmeriCorps

After completing their service, AmeriCorps members earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award which can be used to pay educational expenses at eligible post-secondary institutions or to repay qualified student loans. The education award is equal to the maximum amount of the U.S. Department of Education Pell Grant, currently approximately $6,400. Since 1994, AmeriCorps alumni have earned more than $4 billion in education awards, using $1 billion to repay student debt.

AmeriCorps alumni are civic-minded individuals with real-world experience, leadership and problem-solving skills, and a strong desire to make a positive impact. Schools of National Service connect these leaders with higher education institutions which seek to recognize those qualities and honor the service they’ve provided to their community and country. By participating in the program, colleges, universities, and other post-secondary institutions benefit by attracting AmeriCorps alumni to enroll in their institutions.
