  • Class of2023

  • Major, MinorBiochemistry, Studio Arts

When she was considering universities as a high school student, Fatima wanted to attend a school that felt like home. “I come from a big, close, Filipino family. I wanted a college experience that provided the same feeling of belonging and the support that my family does.” And Fatima, from Jersey City, N.J., says she found just that on the Evergreen campus. Fatima is a biochemistry major on the Pre-Dental Track through Loyola’s Pre-Health Programs, a program that is preparing her for dental school and, eventually, her future career as a pediatric dentist. She is also a studio arts minor. Some find this a surprising combination, but Fatima loves that she is developing “both sides of her brain” through her academic programs. “My science professors go above and beyond to help me understand difficult material; my studio arts faculty encourage me to embrace my identity and culture. I continually feel the support of Loyola’s faculty to succeed as an individual, not just as a number.” Beyond her classes, she feels supported and a sense of belonging through her participation in the Chapel Choir and the university’s all-female acapella group, the Loyola Belles. Fatima learns and serves in the local Baltimore community as a ESOL volunteer with the Esperanza Center, where she volunteers as a tutor for high school students.

Loyola’s liberal arts educations allows students like me to diversity my brain in ways I couldn’t even imagine before I came here. The unconditional support faculty and students give to one another created the same environment that my family does for me.
