Contests
Loyola’s Mathematics and Statistics department offers the opportunity for students to participate in two math modeling contests: the Putnam Competition and COMAP’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM).
Putnam Competition
The Putnam Competition is held each December across the US, Canada, and Mexico for undergraduate students interested in solving complex math problems. Students can work in teams or individually on the six-hour exam’s problems. Read more about the Putnam Competition at their website.
Loyola has been participating since 1991 and has had many winning teams over the years! Reach out to Dr. Michael Knapp if you are interested in participating in the upcoming year’s contest.
COMAP’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM)
The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is an international contest for teams of undergraduate students to analyze, model, and solve open-ended application problems. It typically takes place between late January and late February. The contest requires participants to select one problem out of the six choices to then research, model, and compile their results in a written report. The contest provides an opportunity for students to solve problems using applied mathematics and teamwork.
If you are interested in participating in the upcoming year’s contest, please reach out to Dr. Jiyuan Tao for further information.
