Sammy Yerkes '28 wins first place at the Undergraduate Research Colloquium

Sammy Yerkes presenting her research project

Sammy Yerkes '28, a Writing/Bio major and French minor, who was doing an ML405 Internship at Mercy Hospital this spring, won first place in her session at the Undergraduate Research Colloquium! Her project was entitled Multilingualism and Equity in Women’s Health: A Study on Francophone Populations in US Healthcare Settings. Sammy interviewed a multilingual doctor at Mercy and researched multilingualism in health care to show how essential it is for health care professionals to be competent in other languages. Specifically, she studied the effects of multilingual healthcare givers on pre-natal Francophone women's health outcomes. One of her takeaways is that Loyola's strong liberal arts core gives graduates a leg up in the healthcare sector. Amazing job, Sammy!
