Loyola celebrates the life of Trustee Roger A. Waesche, Jr., ’76, MBA ’84

Roger A. Waesche, Jr.

Roger A. Waesche, Jr., a dedicated and engaged member of Loyola’s Board of Trustees since 2018, passed away on Jan. 8, 2026. He was 72.

A double graduate of Loyola, Waesche served on the Board’s Audit/Finance/Physical Plant, Investment, and Executive Compensation committees, sharing expertise from his time at Corporate Office Properties Trust, where he was formerly the president and chief executive officer. At Loyola, Waesche also served previously on the Board of Sponsors for the Sellinger School of Business and Management.

“As an exceptional leader with a commitment to ensuring Loyola’s financial sustainability, Roger brought outstanding expertise to the Board of Trustees,” said Gerry Holthaus, ’71, chair of the Board of Trustees. “We have been fortunate to benefit from his leadership over the past eight years, and we will miss his knowledge, voice, and perspective on the Board.”

“With his exceptional financial expertise, Roger was incredibly valuable in seeing the big picture in our work to strengthen the University’s financial underpinnings,” said Terrence M. Sawyer, J.D., president of Loyola. “He also had a keen eye and a deep understanding of our mission. He understood that there are just certain things that are non-negotiable at a Jesuit institution. Roger brought a powerful voice to the finance committee—a voice of competence and a voice of reason. Loyola is a stronger university thanks to Roger’s involvement, leadership, and contributions.”

As part of their support of Loyola, Waesche and his family established the Waesche Family Scholarship, which provides scholarships with preference given to undergraduate students who are enrolled in the Sellinger School.

Throughout his career, Waesche also served on the Maryland Industrial Development Finance Authority, the boards of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore and Loyola Blakefield, the Greater Baltimore Committee, as a trustee of the Sheppard Pratt Health System, a member of the Maryland Industrial Development Finance Authority, and the Fort Meade Alliance.

“Roger was a person who did not ever feel the need to speak first or speak loudest, but when Roger spoke, people always listened,” Sawyer said. “He picked his moments carefully, and he spoke with an integrity and gravitas that caused everyone around him to care greatly about what he had to say.”

Waesche earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Loyola in 1976 and an MBA in Finance in 1984. His survivors include his wife, Xandy, ’87, MBA ’91, and his children, including his son, Cole, who graduated from Loyola in 2018.
