Background

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales, Australia, and the country’s largest city with a population of 5.5 million residents. It is located on Australia’s southeastern coast

The University of Sydney (USYD) is Australia’s oldest university founded in 1850 and modelled on Cambridge and Oxford universities. The university holds global positions in key ranking placing 1st in Australia (US News best global universities 2026), and 25th in the World (QS world University 2026). It is a global leader in research and education, offering a wide range of academic programs and known for its beautiful architecture and commitment to academic excellence and social impact. Its main campus is in Camperdown, a suburb of Sydney, with additional teaching and research locations across the city. The university is home to 70,000 students, of which over 31,000 are international students.

Most notable alumni that studied at USYD include 8 prime ministers, 2 Nobel laureates, 3 astronauts.

The city of Sydney is built around a beautiful natural harbour, a central feature of its landscape and identity. It is home to world-famous landmarks, like the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge, both architectural marvels. It has beautiful beaches like Bondi, rich vibrant culture, and a multicultural population. The city also offers world-class dining, shopping, and cultural events, and opportunities for outdoor activities, such as swimming and sailing.

It's a hub for world-class events, from the spectacular Sydney New Year's Eve fireworks to the Sydney Mardi Gras. It has efficient public transport, including trains, metros, and ferries, making it easy to get around and explore.

Beyond the city, the stunning coastline is home to diverse destinations like the blue mountains and beautiful parks, including the Royal National Park.

Choosing when to study in Sydney

This is a one-semester program for the fall or the spring semester

  • The fall program runs from early July through mid-November.
  • The spring program runs from mid-February through the end of June.

Course Information

Register for lecture and seminar for each class. Class sizes vary but are larger than LUM size classes.

Courses do not fill up.

Accommodations

Loyola students will live on campus housing.

  • Students stay in Queen Mary building.
  • Students live in single bedrooms with a fridge in the room, shared kitchen and bathrooms with floor mates.
  • Rooms are fully furnished, and the building has a rooftop terrace.
  • There are Aussie residents mixed with international population in the dorms.
  • The dorm is 5 minute walking distance from the main campus.
Cost

Loyola financial aid applies and students are eligible for consideration for all forms of federal, state, institutional and private sources of aid except the Federal Work Study Program. Students studying abroad for either a semester or full academic year will forfeit the value of a Federal Work-Study assignment for the semester/s that they go abroad. If the student qualifies for federal work study, they can use the award for the semester they are on campus during their abroad year.

The program is approved for GI/Veterans Benefits. However, students must contact Loyola’s Registrar’s office as soon as possible before you apply!

Insurance

Students receive Australian health insurance which is also used as a primary insurance during their study abroad program.

Medical insurance is also provided for all students during the program term by Loyola University Maryland through Chubb Insurance. This insurance coverage includes medical evacuation and repatriation, as well as 24-hour support services for medical issues.

Students are required to submit a copy of their U.S. health insurance card/policy. Please be sure not to cancel your US insurance policy while abroad since the provided insurances only function while on program and outside of the US.

Money and Banking

Once accepted into the program, students must call their bank and credit card carriers to tell them that they will be abroad for the semester. Students should carry debit or credit cards with them. Both Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted forms of payment, Discover and AmEx are not accepted.

Travel to and from Sydney

Loyola will arrange and pay for travel to and from Sydney. Any changes to the student’s booked itinerary is made at their own cost. Loyola does not pay for any flight deviations or tickets change. Flights are arranged for students traveling to Sydney.

Students fly to SYD Airport, where students board a free shuttle organized by the University of Sydney.

Criteria for Applying:

Application Requirements:

Students must submit an online application AND a Course Planning form by 11:59 pm on the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving break of their sophomore year to study abroad in the fall or spring term of junior year.

  • Attend a Study Abroad 101 information session.
  • Declare a major before applying to the study abroad program.
  • Discuss with your major advisor the possible courses you could take abroad and see if there are any potential problems with your plans to study abroad; Students cannot be on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.

Criteria for Acceptance

  • Minimum cumulative CQPA average of 3.0
  • Students who can find courses which fit their Loyola program and allow full-time participation and who are neither on disciplinary probation nor have a history of serious disciplinary problems.
  • ROTC candidates can apply as freshman to study abroad in the spring of their sophomore year.
  • An academic interview with the program coordinator at Loyola University Maryland is required after being accepted in the program.

In order to apply for semester and full year programs, students must attend a study abroad 101 session and at least one program specific information session before the application deadline. The application deadline for all Fall, Spring, and year-long opportunities during academic year 2026-2027 is the first Wednesday after Thanksgiving, December 3rd, 2025 at 11:59pm.
