Hallie Herz, MAT '21, awarded for her 2021 Maryland Professional Intern Symposium presentation

Hallie Herz, a 2021 graduate of Loyola University Maryland’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, is a winner of the 2021 Maryland Professional Intern Symposium award for Outstanding Inquiry Study. Her study was titled, “From Progressive to Culturally Relevant in an English Language Arts Classroom.”

Herz, a middle school humanities teacher, attended the Maryland 2021 Professional Development School Network Conference Intern Inquiry Symposium, an online webinar series that students of the MAT program attend. The theme of the webinar was Cultivating Equity in a Time of Change.

“This inquiry project was my favorite part of the MAT program at Loyola. I really valued the opportunity to explore a question of practice through both a review of the literature and action research.  This process has made me a better teacher. It was exciting to see what my classmates and peers at other schools were researching. I am very grateful for Dr. Hersi's support and encouragement throughout this project. She helped me refine my research area and encouraged me to write and submit an article on my research to the PDS Partners journal. Her guidance was invaluable, said Herz.”
