Writers at Work: Faculty Lecture and Q&A

Dr. Kathleen Forni and Dr. James Bunzli

Dr. Kathy Forni, a professor in the English department, specializes in medieval literature. Her research focuses on reception history: how medieval texts become part of the literary canon and how they are reinvented for modern consumption. Her books include Chaucerian Apocrypha: A Counterfeit Canon, The Chaucerian Apocrypha, Chaucer’s Afterlife, and Beowulf's Popular Afterlife in Literature, Comic Books, and Film. She regularly teaches EN 101 Art of Reading, HN 202 Honors: Medieval to Renaissance, and medieval literature courses for English majors that focus on various topics such as medieval passion, toxic masculinity, and the Middle Ages in popular culture.

Dr. James Bunzli has been at Loyola for 25 years. He teaches performance courses and directs Evergreen Players productions. He recently created selfPORTRAITs, an entirely new autobiographical solo performance work in collaboration with Loyola students which was  featured at the Charm City Fringe Festival in 2024.

Dr. Bunzli’s 30+ years of work on Solo Performance have yielded scholarly articles (The Drama Review, Theatre Annual), new work creation with other artists – and multiple pieces he has devised, written, and performed himself (Write a Will, Get Religion, 1973 Dodge Monaco Station Wagon, Time and the Means). This work has been featured at national and international Fringe Festivals. He is currently working on a series of pieces about Civilian Conservation Corps enrollees in Texas and Wyoming between 1933 and 1337.

Dr. Bunzli is an active practitioner, locally (Everyman Theatre, Single Carrot) and nationally (Texas Shakespeare, Idaho Repertory). He had a lengthy association with Compass Rose Theatre in Annapolis, as an actor (Pygmalion, Inherit the Wind), a director (Disgraced, Red) and finally as Interim Artistic Director for the 21/22 season. 
Dr. Bunzli holds an MFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin and a PhD in Theatre from Bowling Green State University.
