Let’s celebrate International Education Month

Dear Members of the Loyola Community,

Throughout November, we are celebrating International Education Month, and I invite you to participate in the numerous festivities, discussions, and enriching offerings that are available. You can find all the information on Loyola’s International Education Month website.

What a wonderful chance for each of us to grow in our journey as Ignatian citizens—individuals who embrace our responsibility to apply Jesuit values to make a difference in the world, including for those on the margins of society. Recognizing the importance of internationalization and our role as citizens of our local and global communities is particularly important during the Ignatian Year—and critical to the work we are participating in around diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You will find a full slate of offerings with great depth and breadth on the International Education Month website, but I would like to call your attention to a few specifically:

  • The Hanway Lecture in Global Studies: Nadia Murad, 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, will deliver the Hanway Lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2021, at 7 p.m. in McGuire Hall and via livestream. Learn more on the Hanway Lecture site.
  • Jesuit Refugee Services in the World and Ignatian Year: Rev. Tom Smolich, S.J., international director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) will offer the month’s keynote presentation, “Toward an Ever Wider We: Pope Francis and the Hope of Education,” on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2021, from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in McGuire West and via livestream.
  • Black Catholic History Month: We are holding events to celebrate the history and heritage of Black Catholics as we mark Black Catholic History Month.

Inspired by the University’s strategic plan, which urges us to be a more equitable and inclusive community, Loyola’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan called for the creation of an annual series of events to help focus our community on internationalization. I want to thank the Rev. Bao Nguyen, S.J., assistant director for international Jesuit collaborations, and everyone who has worked with such great dedication, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm to design a series of opportunities that we can participate in throughout the month.

I hope you will be able to join us for these educational and enlightening events.

Sincerely,

Rodney L. Parker, Ph.D.
Acting Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer
