Minor in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The School of Education offers a minor in ESOL designed to enhance students’ abilities to build a better world through knowledge and understanding of best practices for supporting and creating language-rich environments that build on the strengths and capabilities of all stakeholders, including helping professions in government, community, non-government, and schools. 

Program of Study

The minor in ESOL is 18-19 credit program.  

Required (12 credits)

  • RE 211 Exploring Language: An Introduction to Linguistics  
  • RE 311 Methods for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages 
  • RE 411 Second Language Acquisition: Theory & Practice 
  • ML 104* Core Language Requirement or Additional Language Course (200 Level) 

*included in the elementary education major 

Electives (6-7 credits) 

Two electives from Courses Approved for the ESOL minor.   Elementary education majors will take RE 345* Assessment and Instruction of Literacy for Multilingual Learners and 1 elective from the Courses Approved for the ESOL minor.

Declaring a Minor

Undergraduate students interested in pursuing the minor must schedule an appointment to meet with the ESOL minor advisor before declaring the minor. 

Students who wish to add, change, or drop a minor must submit a Change of Minor form to the Office of the Registrar (MH 141). Be sure to get all the signatures required prior to submitting this form. The Change of Minor form is available on the Office of the Registrar website under forms, or in the Office of the Registrar (MH 141).
