Biography

Astrid Schmidt-King, who joined Loyola in 2015, currently serves as an Associate Teaching Professor and teaches various courses including the Global Environment of Business, International Management, Cross-Cultural Interactions in Business, Sustainability Management, International Business (IB) Law, The Legal Environment of Business, Commercial Law, and Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility.  During her time at Loyola, she directed the IB program and served as the Academic Director of the Sellinger Scholars Program. Astrid chaired the Building a Better World Through Business initiative from 2016-2021, served on the Pre-Law Advisory Board (2021-2025), and she currently serves as a faculty mentor for the Loyola Consulting Group, the faculty moderator for the Women in Business Club and the Sellinger Representative for the University Community Engagement Steering Committee. In  2025 she was named an Ignatian Faculty Fellow and participated in the pilgrimage (Spain & Italy), 2020, she was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, in 2017 she was awarded the Sellinger STAR Award for Service and, in 2016 she was awarded Loyola’s Educator for Life Award.

Schmidt-King earned her MA from Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany (International Relations and Global Politics, 2017), LL.M. from American University Washington College of Law (Law and Government, 2006), Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore School of Law (2002), and BA from New York University (International Relations, 1999). Most recently, Schmidt-King completed an Executive Diploma in Cultural Diplomacy in International Relations & Global Governance from the UN Institute for Training (UNITAR) & The Academy for Cultural Diplomacy (Germany). In her MA thesis, she examined globalization's socioeconomic impact on developed democracies and the rise of right-wing populism. She authored a chapter, “Foreign Law and Policy” in Law and Public Policy, participated in a Fulbright International Education Administrators Seminar (Germany) and the American Council on Germany's immigration delegation in Berlin, was named a Presidential Fellow by the Association of International Education Administrators, completed the Emerging and Developing Global Executive Bowe fellowship by the World Trade Center Institute, was an invited participant of Johns Hopkins’ American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) project on “Social Divisions and Questions of Identity in Germany and the United States.” and she currentlyserves as a member of the Global Diplomact Lab.  Prior academia, Schmidt-King practiced in the fields of immigration law, business compliance, and health care policy in Washington, DC and New York.
