The members of the Teaching Enhancement Committee worked with Academic Affairs to offer a rich opportunity to reflect on the ways in which we teach (and learn) at a place like Loyola, with attention to practical applications for integrating Jesuit principles into the classroom. The morning began with a faculty panel of colleagues who have gone on the Ignatian Pilgrimage reflecting on how the experience shaped or influenced their teaching. The panel was hosted by guest speaker, Dr. Thomas M. Landy, director of the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture at College of the Holy Cross and organizer of the annual Ignatian pilgrimage. This was followed by two breakout sessions: “Sustainability and Jesuit Ideals” and “From Ingrained to Creative Integration of Ignatian Pedagogy in the Classroom.” The day concluded with lunch and conversation.

10:20 - 10:40 -- Keynote on the Jesuit Mission, in Action (4th Floor Program Room)

Thomas M. Landy, Director of the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture and Lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, College of the Holy Cross

Dr. Landy, a sociologist with a specialization in the sociology of religion and Catholicism, is director of the Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture at the College of the Holy Cross. He is also a lecturer in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Holy Cross. His primary research is in global Catholicism, and will soon launch an international project, Catholics & Cultures, at Holy Cross. Landy was director of the College’s Lilly Vocation Discernment Initiative from 2003-08. This initiative sponsored two dozen programs including convocations, summer internships, parish ministry internships and lectures to encourage students to reflect on faith and commitment as they consider their career paths. 


In 1992 he founded Collegium, a colloquy on faith and intellectual life. A consortium of 65 Catholic colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada, Collegium sponsors highly regarded summer faculty development programs around the country. Since 2001, Collegium has been sponsored by The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, and Landy continues to serve as Collegium's Executive Director.  Dr. Landy is also the organizer of the annual Ignatian summertime pilgrimage for faculty, and for colleagues at Jesuit colleges and universities around the United States, to visit important sites in the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits.


He is editor of "As Leaven for the World: Catholic Reflections on Faith, Vocation, and the Intellectual Life" (Franklin, WI: Sheed and Ward, 2001), and, with Karen Eifler, "Becoming Beholders: Cultivating a Sacramental Imagination in the Classroom" (Collegeville: Liturgical Press, 2014). He is the 2009 recipient of the John Henry Newman Medal, which honors exemplars of Jesuit Catholic education, from Loyola College in Maryland.  Landy holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Boston University, an M.Div. from Weston School of Theology, an M.A. in international relations from the University of Chicago and a B.A. in history from Fairfield University.

Members of the Loyola faculty who have participated on the Ignatian pilgrimage reflect on how that experience shaped and influenced their pedagogy.

I. Sustainability in the Jesuit Ideal in Action (McGuire West)

Sustainability: what is it?  The latest buzzword, the ability to sustain an action?  Why is it important to me, my students, and my subject?  How can I incorporate sustainability as a Jesuit ideal into my teaching and my classroom? Join faculty from the Sciences (Maren Blohm, Bernadette Roche), Business (Tim Brown, S.J.; Patricia Kanashiro), and the Humanities/Fine Arts (Mary Beth Akre) to get concrete ideas for how to incorporate and activate Sustainability principles into your classroom and teaching.  The session is a series of roundtable discussions where you can either focus on ideas from your area or branch out and see how ideas from other disciplines may be incorporated into your classroom.  Whether you are broaching the topic for the first time, considering simple tweaks like incorporating No Impact Week next year, or feeling advanced in development of a sustainable culture, there is something for everyone.

II. From Ingrained to Creative Integration of Ignatian Pedagogy in the Classroom (McGuire East)

Roundtable discussion, anchored by Richard Blum (Philosophy), Suzanne Keilson (Engineering), Thomas Landy (Sociology; Holy Cross), and Jeremy Schwartz (Economics), on the integration of Ignatian Pedagogy in the classroom. Participants will leave with specific ideas they can apply into their own, varied courses.
