The learning aims for the Certificate in English for Speakers of Other Languages are:

• The student will understand linguistic aspects of language and language use.
• The student will critically evaluate philosophies and theories related with bilingual education.
• The student will appreciate sociocultural and political roles in language development and education policies.
• The student will identify and use curricular practices for second language acquisition.
• The student will examine and use several models for reading and reading instruction.
• The student will be knowledgeable in language proficiency assessments for second language acquisition.
• The student will become an advocate for linguistically diverse youth.
