Biography
Maiju Lehmijoki Wetzel (previously Lehmijoki-Gardner), Ph.D., B.S.N., R.N., has taught in Loyola's Theology Department since 2000, soon after completing her doctoral studies in medieval history in her country of origin, Finland. Her research focused on Catherine of Siena and other late medieval women saints.
Dr. Wetzel later shifted her career toward health and is a licensed registered nurse (R.N.) in Maryland and Finland. Dr. Wetzel has served as Loyola's Director of Pre-Health Programs since 2014. She is a co-founder of Loyola's popular medical humanities minor in Health and Human Experience. Dr. Wetzel also places an emphasis on community service as a formative aspect of students' pre-professional and personal growth. She is the faculty founder of Health Outreach Baltimore, Loyola's service-focused partnership with Mercy Medical Center, established in 2014.
